On February 11, 2016 the American Association of People with Disabilities announced the winners of its 2016 AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Awards.  CLPC researcher Alice Wong, staff research associate at UCSF, is one of two people to receive this national award for her work in founding and organizing the Disability Visibility Project, a community partnership with StoryCorps and an online community dedicated to recording, amplifying, and sharing disability stories and culture.  Alice recently completed a term as a member of the National Council on Disability, a position she was appointed to by President Obama.

During the official celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Alice "visited" the White House via a telepresence robot.  She attended the event, moving about the public spaces while controlling the robot from her keyboard at home, and she got the chance to meet both the President and the Vice President.  It was the first time such technology was used in the White House, and it was widely reported in the media.  The image captures the occasion of Alice's encounter with President Obama.  (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)
